When the 1970s and 1980s were colored by banking crises, regulators from around the world banded together to set international standards on how to manage financial risk. Those standards, now known as the Basel standards, define a common framework and taxonomy on how risk should be measured and managed. This led to the rise of professional financial risk managers, which was my first job. The largest professional risk associations, GARP and PRMIA, now have over 250,000 certified members combined, and there are many more professional risk managers out there who haven't gone through those particular certifications. We are now beset by data breaches and data privacy scandals, and regulators around the world have responded with data regulations.

Artificial intelligence and tech roles fill the top ranks of the UK's fastest emerging jobs according to new data revealed by LinkedIn. The top three ranked emerging jobs, according to the social media/career website were artificial intelligence specialist, data protection officer and robotics engineer. Other roles seeing rapid growth included site reliability engineer and data scientist. LinkedIn's research looked at each of the emerging roles to discover what types of organisations were recruiting them, what skillsets the role demanded and where the role tended to be geographically. For example, AI specialists were being hired mostly by IT and financial services firms, research entities and software development firms.

As we learned during the general election, political campaigns now routinely involve paid social advertising utilising a variety of data to identify likely supporters or swing voters. Such'social scoring', whether done manually or by an algorithm, is concerning to some. Professor John Rust of Cambridge University's Psychometric Centre told the Guardian: "The danger of not having regulation around the sort of data you can get from Facebook and elsewhere is clear. With this, a computer can actually do psychology; it can predict and potentially control human behaviour." He finds it "incredibly dangerous" that people's "attitudes are being changed behind their backs".
